UNIT 1 Flashcards
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization
about 40 percent of Filipino workers in the agriculture sector contribute an average of 20 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product. In their 2020 report on food security and nutrition, nearly 690 million people in the world are hungry, equating to 8.9 percent of the world population. Additionally, most of the undernourished (381 million) are found in Asia.
Agriculture includes
forestry, crop production, livestock farming and aquaculture cultivation. Crops are essential in the demand for domestic food consumption and the commercial export industry. In recent years, backyard farming to raise plants, specifically vegetables and fruits, is commonplace in households to sustain a steady food supply (Sanchez, 2020).
One of the main agricultural enterprises is crop cultivation. Major agricultural systems in the Philippines include lowland irrigated farming, rainfed farming, and upland farming while the major agricultural products in the country include rice, coconuts, corn, sugarcane, bananas, pineapples, and mangoes (FAO, n.d.).
ACP remains to be relevant because it continues to play an important role in the Philippine economy as well as providing jobs for the population. Crop production will continue to provide food and supplies, feed and cash crops alike, marketable harvests, raw materials, and food security.
