Archetype
1.) A recurrent symbol or motif in literature, art , or mythology.
ex. The Garden symbolizes love and fertility.
2.)A very typical example of a person or thing.
ex. He is the archetype of a business man.
Characterization
The way which authors present and reveal characters.
Through: direct description, character actions, presentation of other characters who help define each other.
Major character
The most important figure in the story
Minor character
role is to illuminate the major characters
Foil
Character that provides contrast to the protagonist
Round Character
3D personality
Flat character
only 1 or 2 striking qualities. Either good or bad
Dynamic Character
grows to have higher understanding by the end
Static Character
The character is unchanged by the end.
What are the types of conflict (there are five)?
1.) person v. person
2.) person v. society
3.) person v. nature
4.) person v. fate/supernatural
5.) person v. self conflict
What are the types of POV?
1.) Third person ( 3 sub types. objective, omniscient, and limited- omniscient)
2.) First person
3rd Person Omniscient
The narrator is all knowing of the character’s feelings, motives, and thoughts. Additionally, what they say and do.
3rd person limited
The narrator has access to the thoughts, motives, etc of one of the characters (at most one). Neither the reader or narrator has access to the lives of the other characters.
3rd person objective
Narrator doesn’t have access to the thoughts or mind of the characters but just reports on the dialogue and action.
First person narration
Narrator presents the point of view from only one character’s consciousness.
