1.) Subject

What are the eight parts of speech?
nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjugations, interjections.
What is an action verb?
Shows physical or mental action.
There are transitive and intransitive action verbs
What is a transitive action verb?
takes a direct object
ex. John passed the ball to me
What is an intransitive action verb?
- Doesn’t have a direct object
ex. John passed
What is a linking verb? (Examples of linking verbs)
Links the subject to a word that describes (adj) or identifies it (noun)
ex. am, is, was, are, seem, be, smell, look, taste, remain, feel, appear, sound , seem
* He is a general for the North
* He looks tired
What is a helping verb? (examples of helping verb)
Placed before the main verb to help make grammatical structure.
(ex. be, have, do, can , could, should, may, ought to, shall, must, might, will)
- She has opened the door
- He could have opened the door.
Simple sentence structure
consisting of one independent clause
Compound sentence structure
A sentence compounded of two or more independent clauses (I +I)
Complex sentence structure
sentence consists of an independent and a dependent clause ( I +D , D +I, D + I+D)
