Superior/Cranial
Toward the head end of the body; upper
Inferior/Caudal
Away from the head; lower
Lateral
To the side of, or away from the middle of the body (The ears are lateral to the nose)
Medial
Towards the middle or center (The chest is medial to the arm)
Proximal
Nearer to the trunk of the body or to the point of attachment to the body
Distal
Away from the trunk; far from the point of attachment (The hands are distal to the shoulder)
Posterior/Dorsal
Back; toward the back of the body
Anterior/Ventral
Front; toward the front of the body
Anatomical Position
The standard anatomical position; standing upright, palms facing forward
Coronal (Frontal) Plane
A vertical plane runs side to side; cutting the body into posterior and anterior portions
Cross Section (Transverse/Axial) Plane
Divides the body into cranial and caudal (head and tail) portions, think horizontal
