Immune System Flashcards
What is innate immunity?
The system in which you were born
What is adaptive immunity?
The immunity that develops when a person’s immune system responds to a foreign substance/microorganism such as after an infection or vaccine
1st response of innate immunity?
External surface barriers (skin, mucous membranes)
Examples of mucous membranes are “skin protection”
Skin: acid, mucin, enzymes, defensins
Mucous membranes: mucus, hairs, cilia, gastric acid, tears, saliva
Internal responses of innate immunity
Antimicrob, phagocytes, natural killer cells, inflammation, fever
Inflammatory response: what, why, process
- Occurs when tissue is injured by bacteria etc.
- Damaged cells will release chemicals including histamine, bradykinin, and prostaglandins. This will cause blood vessels to leak fluid into tissues causing swelling.
Reason for Fever
- Pyrogens form macrophages
- Kills pathogens
Reason for Inflammation
- Redness, heat, swelling, pain,
- Inflammatory release: helps repair tissue, histamine released
- Vasodilation
- Phagoacyte mobilization
What is the 2nd line of defense?
The adaptive or specific defense system & takes a while to call in
What are defensins?
Peptides in your skin that help keep bacteria & fungi from settling around inflamed or scraped skin
Histamine is released by what, when, and causes what
Is released by mast-cell bound IgE antibodies when they bind to an antigen will cause vasodilation (increased blood flow)
