Understanding Algebraic Expressions Flashcards
What is Algebra?
Algebra is a branch of Mathematics that uses letters to represent numbers
What are the letters used in Algebra called?
It is called Variables as the the value varies or changes
What is an Algebraic expression
It consist of variables and numbers connected by some operations
What are words that represent the addition operation?
plus ; sum ; added to
What are words that represent the subtraction operation?
minus ; difference; subtract from
What are words that represent the multiplication operation?
product ; times ; multiply by
What are words that represent the division operation?
divide by ; ratio ; quotient
Express the following as an algebraic expression
the sum of x and y
x + y
or
y + x
Express the following as an algebraic expression
add 3 to b
3 + b
or
b + 3
Express the following as an algebraic expression
x minus y
x - y
Express the following as an algebraic expression
x subtract from y
y - x
Note that the variable after the word ‘from’ should go to the left of the minus sign
Express the following as an algebraic expression
the product of x and y
xy
or yx
In algebra we do not use the multiplication sign when we multiply any variables as the sign may be confused with the letter x
Express the following as an algebraic expression
x times 2
2x
In algebra the number is always placed to the left of the variable
Express the following as an algebraic expression
x divide by y
x/y
Express the following as an algebraic expression
the x divide by y
x/y
