Number Sequence Flashcards
What is a number sequence
It is a set of numbers that follow a fixed operation that can be used to predict the next number or any number at any point of the sequence
How do you determine the sequence?
Look out for patterns that you can observe from consecutive numbers
What is the pattern from this set of numbers?
1, 3, 5, 7, 9….
Notice that the difference between the consecutive numbers is 2
3 - 1 = 2
5 - 3 = 2
7 - 5 = 2
9 - 7 = 2
To determine the next number, add 2 to the previous number
So after 9, we get 11
What is the pattern from this set of numbers?
10, 8, 6, 4, 2……
Notice that the difference between the consecutive numbers is -2
8 - 10 = -2
6 - 8 = -2
4 - 6 = -2
2 - 4 = -2
To determine the next number, subtract 2 from the previous number
So after 2, we get 0
What is the pattern from this set of numbers?
2, 4, 8, 16, 32
Notice that we when divide a number with the previous number, we get 2
4/2 = 2
8/4 = 2
16/8 = 2
32/16 = 2
To determine the next number, multiply 2 with the previous number
So after 32, we get 64
What is the pattern from this set of numbers?
128, 64, 32, 16, 8
Notice that we when we divide a number with the next number, we get 2
128/64 = 2
64/32 = 2
32/16 = 2
16/8 = 2
To determine the next number, divide 2 with the previous number
So after 4, we get 2
What is the pattern from this set of numbers?
1, 4, 9, 16, …
Notice that each number is the square of the position of that number
12 = 1
22 = 4
32 = 9
42 = 16
To determine the next number, we take the square of the position of that number. Since it is the 5th number
52 = 25
