Uncertainty Flashcards
What is uncertainty?
-The amount of error in the measurement
-The range in which the value lies
What is uncertainty represented by?
-Represented by a ± symbol
-Is always half of the smallest interval
Example:
-A reading of 3.2N, has a smallest interval of 0.1N, half of which is 0.05, meaning the uncertainty 3.2±0.05N
How is percentage uncertainty reduced?
-By taking larger measurements
-By using instruments with greater resolution
What is percentage uncertainty?
-It is the percentage of the result which is an uncertain value
-The smaller the percentage uncertainty, the better and more accurate the value is to the true value
How do you calculate percentage uncertainty?
(Absolute Uncertainty x 100)/measurement
