What is UN?
The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 to promote peace, security, cooperation, and development among countries around the world. It is formed by 193 member states and works on a wide range of global issues, like diplomacy, human rights, and international law.
General Assembly
It is the main body of the UN and all the member States partecipate, each of them has one vote. It discusses and decides on several international issues and gives advice.
The Security Council
The Security Council keeps international peace and security. It has 15 members, including five permanent members: China, France, Russia, the UK, and the USA that are always present and have power of veto. The SC can impose sanctions, authorize peacekeeping missions and other actions to keep international peace.
Secretariat
It’s the administrative arm of UN that implements the decisions made by the General Assembly and Security Council. It is headed by the Secretary-General. It also includes departments, offices, and specialized agencies that work for the UN
International Court of Justice
It’s the main judicial organ of UN and settles legal disputes between countries, it also gives advice on legal questions
Economic and Social Council
It promotes cooperation and development efforts, manages UN specialized agencies, and coordinates humanitarian assistance during crises.
UN Trusteeship Council
It was established to control the administration of trust territories, but now, It only meets when necessary to discuss its future functions or procedural matters.
Specialized Agencies
there are some indipendent agencies that work within UN, such as WHO (World Health Organisation), Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other specific bodies
