UMN vs LMN lesions Flashcards
Where does an UMN lesion occur?
cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum, brainstem, spinal cord
Where does a LMN lesion occur?
anterior horn cell, nerve roots, peripheral nerves, NMJ, muscles
What type of muscle weakness do you see in UMN lesions?
quadraplegia, hemiplegia, diplegia, paraplegia
What type of muscle weakness do you see in LMN lesions?
proximal (myopathy)
distal (neuropathy)
What is muscle tone line in UMN lesions?
spasticity, rigidity (hypERtonic)
What is muscle tone line in UMN lesions?
hypotonic
In which type of lesion are fasiculations present?
LMN lesions ONLY (particularly tongue)
What are tendon reflexes like in UMN lesions?
hyperreflexia
What are tendon reflexes like in LMN lesions?
hyporeflexia / areflexia
In which type of lesion are abdominal reflexes present?
LMN lesions
What type of sensory loss occurs in UMN lesions?
loss of cortical sensations
What type of sensory loss occurs in LMN lesions?
loss of peripheral sensations
What does an EMG show in UMN lesions?
normal nerve conduction
decreased interference pattern and firing rate
What does an EMG show in LMN lesions?
abnormal nerve conduction
large motor units
fasiculations and fibrillations
In what type of lesion do you see atrophy?
LMN lesions
