Q

What was Earth’s second atmosphere?

A

ots of volcanic activity, so there was CO2, water vapor (formed clouds), and ammonia. Carbon dioxide dissolved into the oceans and simple bacteria thrived off of the sun and carbon making oxygen.

Q

3rd atmosphere?

A

Our current atmosphere, made up of 78% of nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% trace gasses. Plants and animals can thrive in these conditions.

Q

What is absolute age?

A

Numerical number for the age of fossil

16
Q

What are beds?

A

Sedimentary rock layers.

17
Q

Bedding planes-

A

Boundaries between beds

18
Q

Relative age-

A

Age of an object relative to the age of objects around it- not numerical

19
Q

Law of superposition-

A

Youngest rock is at the top, oldest is at the bottom

20
Q

Law of original horizontality

A

Rock layers left undisturbed will stay horizontal

21
Q

Unconformity-

A

Missing piece in geological history- weathering, erosion, ect.

22
Q

Law of crosscutting-

A

A fault or igneous intrusion is always younger than the rock layers it cuts through

23
Q

Radiometric Dating:

A

comparing the relative percentages of a radioactive (parent) isotope and a stable (daughter) isotope

24
Q

Isotopes

A

same element but different numbers of neutrons

25
Q

Trace fossils:

A

a fossilized mark that formed in sedimentary rock by the movement of an animal on or within soft sediment(burrows)

26
Q

Index fossil-

A

Fossil that shows the exact age of a layer. Short lived, widespread, adaptable, easily recognizable.

27
Q

Types of trace fossils?

A

Footprints, burrows, and tracks

28
Q

Molds

A

empty cavities of organisms

29
Q

Casts

A

the empty cavities are filled with sand or mud
