Ultrasound, CT, MRI and Nuclear Medicine Flashcards
What is an Ultrasound?
A non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves for imaging soft tissue.
List 3 common U/S procedures that require NO patient prep:
- Vascular (Arterial, Carotid, Venous)
- Extremities/small parts
- Echocardiogram
List 4 common U/S procedures that REQUIRE patient prep:
- Abdomen
- Pelvic
- Obstetrical (OB)
- Biopsies done under U/S (FNA, breast biopsy etc)
What do you transcribe on an U/S req for a procedure WITH patient prep?
- Place RN instructions sheet inside Kardex
- Book Porter
- Send chart with porter
- check for post-test orders
What do you transcribe on an U/S req for a procedure without patient prep?
- Book Porter
- Send chart with porter
- check for post-test orders
List 8 CT procedures:
- Abdominal (gallbladder, liver, renal/kidney, pelvic)
- Facial Bones
- Sinuses
- Brain
- Head
- Spine (lumbar, thoracic, cervical)
- Chest (lungs)
- Biopsies done under CT
What do you transcribe on an CT req?
- Place RN instructions sheet inside Kardex
- Book Porter
- Send chart with porter
- check for post-test orders
What is a MRI?
A technique for viewing the interior of the body using a powerful magnetic field. MRI can distinguish between benign and malignant tumors.
List 6 contraindications for MRI:
- pacemakers
- cochlear implant
- cerebral aneurysm clips
- any electrically, magnetically, or mechanically activated implants
- ferrous-based prosthetic devices
- pregnancy
List 8 MRI scans:
- Upper and lower extremities
- Bones and joints
- Spine
- Brain
- Head
- Vascular studies
- Lungs
- Abdomen
How many appointments are needed for Nuclear Medicine? For what? How far between?
2 appointments 2 hours apart from each other. One is for the injection of the radiotracer, the other is for the scan. ex. inj@ 0800 scan@1000
List some common Nuclear Medicine studies that require NO patient prep:
- Bone Scan
- L&S scan
- RBC Liver scan
- WBC scan (Indium)
- Gallium Scan
- Thyroid Uptake and scan (aka RIU or T4 uptake)
- Perfusion Lung scan (VQ scan)
- Renal scan
- PET scan
List some common Nuclear Medicine studies that REQUIRE patient prep:
- Hida scan (liver and gallbladder - hepatobiliary)
- Schillings test
- MIBI scan
- Persantine MIBI scan
- Thallium scan
What do you transcribe on a Nuclear Medicine req for a procedure without patient prep?
