Ultrasound Flashcards
Amplitude
Maximum disturbance caused by a wave
Wavelength
Distance between two points on the wave moving in the same direction
Frequency
Number of waves that pass a point in one second
How can ultrasound be used
Ultrasound imaging- scan bodies and see organs, check baby development and detect tumours and gallstones
ultrasound waves- break down kidney stones by vibrating them to break up and pass out in urine. No painful surgery.
Ultrasound advantages over x ray
Produces images of soft tissue
No damage to living cells
How do we get the image of eg, pre natal scan
Waves are partly reflected at boundary as they pass into another
Time taken for reflection detection calculates depth
Waves transfer energy from one point to another
Are particles transferred?
No particles of matter are transferred by waves
Longitudinal waves
Each particle moves backwards and forwards about its normal position parallel to direction of wave movemnet
Transverse waves
Particle moves uo and down 90’ ti direction of wave movement
How do sound (and ultrasound) waves travel
Longitudinal waves
