Sparks Flashcards
How can a charged object become discharged
How does this work
By earthing it
Electrons are transferred from the charged object to earth
How can people receive an electrostatic shock
If they are electrically charged and become discharged by earthing
Two insulating materials with the same charge will….
Repel eachother
Two insulating materials with different charges will….
Attract eachother
What are the atoms or molecules that become charged called
Ions
When static builds up, what charge will the material that GAINS electrons have
Why
Negatively charged due to excess electrons which are negative
When static builds up, what charge will the material that LOSES electrons have
Why
Positive
It has lost electrons which are negative
How is static electricity caused
When two insulating materials are rubbed against each other, electrons are transferred.
Electrons (negative charge) transfer from one material to the other leaving one material positive and the other negative
They are attracted to each other 🎈
How can we reduce the danger of getting an electric shock
Ensuring appliances are earthed
Using insulating mats
Wearing shoes with insulating soles
Why do lorries that contain flammable gasses or fine particles need to be earthed before unloading
Friction causes a build up in charge
This could lead to a spark which ignites flammable substance 💥
How is static electricity a nuisance
Dirt and dust can be attracted to insulators such as TV screens
It can cause some fabrics to stick to skin 👕
How do anti static sprays, liquids and cloths help reduce problems of static electricity
Preventing transfer of charge from one insulator to another
No build up of charge ensures no discharge
Why are aircrafts connected to fuel tankers
To make sure any charge built up on the fuel by friction flows to earth via a pipe
Ensures no discharge and spark to ignite the fuel ✈️
