Ultrasound 3 Flashcards

Ultrasound artefacts

1
Q

What is an acoustic shadow image artefact ?

A

signal voids that appear behind structures that strongly absorb or reflect ultrasonic waves. This can be useful for diagnosing kidney stones

Q

What are posterior acoustic enhancement artefacts ?

A

increased echos deep to structures that absorb sound very well. They can be useful for diagnosing fluid-filled structures such as cysts

Q

What are comet tail artefacts?

A

when small calcific/ crystalline/ highly reflective objects come in contact with the ultrasound wave. They can be useful for diagnosing tiny stones

Q

What are twinkling artefacts?

A

artifacts that appear when sound waves reflect from dense objects, during a doppler scan they come up as rainbow streaks. They can be a indication of abnormalities in blood flow

Q

what are mirror artefacts?

A

when the primary beam reflects from a surface but instead of returning to the transducer it encounters another structure giving a false reading of a deep structure
