Ultrasound Flashcards
What are ultrasound used to examine?
Guide biopsy needles
Fertility
Baby hips
vesseIs
Neonatal head
Breast
Scrotum
Abdomen
MSK
Why are ultrasound used?
Quick
Cheap
Portable
Non invasive
No radiation
Good soft tissue Images
Tolerable for patients
What frequency does an ultrasound go at?
20KH2 which is higher than human hearing
What are the different types of Probes?
Transvaginal
Curvilinear
Linear
What is a linear array Probe used for?
Used for vascular work due to its flat surface
What is a Curvilinear array Probe used for?
used for general and obsteric work
The curved head allows the beam to be angled - for example, under the ribs
What name is given to the sound that comes back?
An echo - Reflected sound
What is Acoustic impedence?
The physical property of tissue
How much resistance an ultrasound beam encounters as it Passes through different (particular) types of tissue
(How much energy is absorbed with different tissues to know What tissue it is)
What is sound?
The process of transfering energy from one place to another by a series of collisions
These collisions are between adjacent molecules in the medium through which the sound is passing
How does sound travel best?
The closer the molecules the faster the sound waves moves through a medium
solids are most efficient due to the tightly packed molecules
However- bone and metal don’t conduct sound well
What is attenuation?
It’s a loss in energy as some of the wave’s energy is absorbed as it Passes through a medium and others are being reflected as a proportion bounces back in the form of an echo
What are the different types of Attenuation
Absorbtion
Passes through
Refection
What is used to differentiate the Acoustic impedence (AI) of air and body? muddy walk analogy
