He was king due to an agreement between Mary QOS and Elizabeth I

He confiscated o’neills land and granted the to English set of lords

Financial reasons
James could collect taxes from people in ulster once he controlled it. This would add to the Crown’s wealth which was always needing replenished
Law + order reasons
There was a belief that Ireland needed a good government, a long held belief. James believed that English and Scottish settlers would be able to bring this about
Security reasons
The Irish have previously looked to spain for help which made James nervous especially after 1588. James feared spain might attack England via Ireland, Ireland was seen as a potential back door
Population concerns
England was increasingly overpopulated and a platation ind ulster would solve this problem. Some of the population would disperse into Ulster.
Religious reasons
The only area in Ireland tht was Protestant was a area around Dublin called the pale (it became Protestant after the reformation) the remainder of Ireland was Gaelic and catholic and James was not happy as he was a firmly Protestant monarch
