What did these undertakers do
They paid rent to the English crown for thousands of acres of land which they would rent to their tenants
What was the undertakers responsibility
To provide weapons for their settlers and to also provide fortified bawns to settle in should the native Irish attack
What were they forbidden to do
They were forbidden from renting land to native Irish
Why did the Munster plantation fail
It failed due to many different reasons
Number of settlers
It failed as only 4000 of the expected 20000 actually settled in Ireland
Absent
Many undertakers became absent and left
Wrong people
They failed to encourage the right sort of people / tenents to settle in Ireland because it was far away from England
Weapons and fortified bawns
Undertakers failed to provide weapons or fortified bawns for their Tenants which meant no protection from the native Irish or Hugh O’neills army from ulster
Native Irish tenants
The undertakers broke the rules and allowed native Irish to rent land
Took land from native Irish
The English took land from the naive Irish which angered all Irish people including O’Neill
