What were their main aims?
To create a loyal, Protestant English style population
What did the planters do?
Hoped to improve farming when they arrived.
They grew more crops than the Irish had done and less cattle.
How would they set up the living location?
They hoped to set up a network of large and small towns throughout the province.
Like the Munster Plantation, they hoped to link towns through new roads, which would also help with trade.
The impact:
Tension between the Catholic and Protestants still exist. Unfortunately this has resulted in a great loss of lives in Ulster and throughout the country over the last 400 years.

How did she first try to control Ireland?
By giving loyal Hugh O’Neill the title of ‘Earl of Tyrone’ and planting adventurers there to enforce English customs etc.
How did her first attempt at controlling Ulster go?
The adventurers made Hugh O’Neill and O’Donnell mad and asked Philip II Of Spain for help (which didn’t come. The chiefs rebelled anyways in 1594.
What happened during the 9 Year’s War?
Gaelic clans fought against English control. Hugh O’Neill won battles like the Battle of the Yellow Ford, inspiring others. King Philip II sent 4,000 soldiers in support in 1601 Kinsale, Cork but were defeated (Battle of Kinsale).
