Munster Plantation Flashcards
Aims of Munster plantation
The plantation aimed to have a community of English settlers in Ireland
Each settlement would be linked by new roads
They hoped to bring a modern English style of farming
Farmers would live together in clusters
Results of the Munster Plantation
The Munster plantation did not succeed in its aims of spreading Protestantism, English laws and an English way of life.
However, it would set up new towns e.g. Killarney, Lismore, Younghal, Mallow and Bandon, industries and introduce new farming methods (tillage) to Ireland.
Ultimately, it was so important as it served as a guideline for future English leaders to follow. Mistakes made in this plantation would not be made in the next. This would lead to long-term English control of Ireland.
They hope 20,000 people would come but only a fifth did.
They still had to rent to the Gaeilic Irish.
