MoA
Progesterone receptor modulator.
Inhibits or delays ovulation
More effective than levonorgestrel
When can it be used?
> 96 - 120 hours after unprotected sex.
Within 5 days of unprotected sex that occurred during 5 days before estimated ovulation.
Dose
30 mg
Vomiting < 3 hours = replacement dose
Cautions
Severe asthma treated by oral corticosteroids
Liver impairment
Contraindications
Repeated use within the same menstrual cycle
Patient conselling
Reduces effectiveness of regular contraceptives
Use additional barrier protection
- COC = 14 days (16 if Qlaira)
- POP = 9 days (14 if parenteral)
Wait 5 days before startign regular hormonal contraception OR using levonorgestrel as EHC
Side effects
Menstrual irregularities
Counselling
- Next period may be early/late
- Barrier protection until next period
- Lower abdominal pain = see GP (to rule out ectopic pregnancy)
- Abnormal periods = take a pregnancy test (must ne at least 3 weeks after unprotected sex)
