Levonorgestrel

A

Prevents ovulation + fertilisation
Dose = 1500 mg within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
Vomiting = if less than 3 hours, give replacement dose.

Etonogestrel implant

A
  • 3 years
  • MHRA warning = reports of neurovascular injury and migration of implant to lung (via pulmonary artery). Must be inserted by a trained professional to reduce this risk. Inform patients that implant must be palapble - otherwise locate and remove ASAP. If cannot location in arm, use chest imaging.

A

Chemical disrupt and immobilise sperm.
Less effective than other methods, should be used with additional contraception e.g. condoms, caps, diaphragms
Not suitable for those at high risk of STI - associated with genital lesions and increased risk of acquiring infections.
Effective up to 1 hour after application
