Uk's Evolving Human Landscape Flashcards
Define site
The land or location on which something is built.
Define situation
The location of a place in relation to somewhere else e.g. London is situated in England
Why is London on a good site?
Because the land is fairly flat and easy to build on sand the river Thames means largest ships can dock near the centre.
Why does London have a good situation?
The time zone in relation to other places make trading easy.
Name the layers of the burgess model
CBD, inner city, inner suburbs, outer suburbs and the rural urban fringe.
CBD main function
Main function is for people who work in banks and financial services as well as other office jobs.
How do city’s develop according to the burgess model
As the city expands the rings of the suburbs and rural urban fringe form . As things go out the density lowers, as things space out more and the buildings tend to be newer as the oldest part of the city is its centre. Environmental quality gets better as you go out
What is the land use of the city like as it goes out.
As the city goes out, the land use switches to more family based with the CBD being almost exclusively where jobs are the inner city is the housing for the people who work in the CBD the suburbs have larger houses and schools and shops for family’s. However industry picked up again in the rural urban fringe but just a bit.
How do migrants fit in to jobs in London
Skilled migrants fill in jobs that brits can’t do or generally aren’t as good at and unskilled migrants fill in the jobs brits don’t want to do. Without migrants staffing for things like hotels, restaurants and manual construction would be a lot harder
Why are there often migrant communities?
They support people of their ethnicity in things like corner shops and live together to attempt to avoid racism.
What are some pros and cons of migration?
The more foreigners there are the more cultures are introduced. High birth rate can put pressure on schools and many come with children. However this can improve schools immensely as some schools in Lambeth can speak 140 language for their foreign students make up 85% of the school.
Define inequality
Inequality is when there is a significant difference and therefore divide
Define depravation
When a person or group of people are deprived of something e.g. Income or education.
What is deindustrialisation
When manufacturing decreases and industries have to close down.
What is decentralisation
A shift in both shopping and employment.
What is depopulation
When the number of people decline as they move to other (better) areas
When an area is reshape or rebuilt to have a different purpose, this can include updating transport links.
What is regeneration
What is rebranding
When the overall look and/or name is given to an area to give it a new image, most of the building work stays the same.
What is BedZED?
A sustainable housing development.
How does BedZED control heating?
There is a “sunspace” on the south side of the building with multiple glazing on the windows that acts as a greenhouse, heating up in the sun to heat the house.
How do BedZED houses control heat
The walls are extremely thick and are filled with insulation 37cm thick. As well as at least triple glazed windows. There is also a ventilation system that heats air coming in using the air going out. To make the house cooler you just open some windows.
How do BedZED houses get electricity?
The BedZED houses are connected to the mains but also have solar panels on the south side of the house to go back into the mains and to electric car charging points.
How is London reducing pollution?
With schemes such as cycle hire, the congestion fee, low emissions zones that lorries can’t enter and improved transport links as well as new hybrid busses.
