OLD LABOUR (SOCIAL DEMOCRACY)
Key labour principles:
-nationalism
-redistribution from rich to poor
-continually improving welfare & state services
>largely rejected Thatcherite/ free-market reforms or a Blairite approach
NEW LABOUR (THIRD WAY)
> revision of traditional Lab. values
Anthony Giddens influence:
shift in emphasis from- heavy focus on working class TO wider class base & less robust alliance with the trade unions
ONE NATION
Paternalistic- adopted by Cons. under Disraeli’s leadership (19th Century) AND shown by David Cameron & Theresa May (21st Century)
>rich have obligation to help the poor
NEW RIGHT
> NEO (OR NEW) CONSERVATIVES: state = authoritarian to morality and law & order
NEO-LIBERALS: endorsed the free-market approach and rolling back of state in people’s lives & businesses
CLASSICAL LIBERALS
Individual freedom best achieved with state having a minimal role
MODERN LIBERALS
Against free-market capitalism (thought it led to many individuals not being free)
>freedom = not simply ‘being left alone’
LEFT WING
> change, reform in way society operates
radical criticisms of the capitalism made by liberal & socialist parties
RIGHT WING
> supports staus quo, little or no change
need for order, stability & hierarchy
