UK Human Flashcards
Regeneration
The improving of an area by re-developing it
E.g. Building new houses or industries on a brownfield site
Sustainability def
Meeting the needs of today without jeopardising the needs of the future
How is London sustainable
Boris bikes, traffic congestion charges, hydrogen powered buses and taxis, double decker buses, carbon emissions being observed
3 pillars of sustainability
People (social), planet (environmental), profit (economical)
How can London be improved
Jobs: houses are too expensive in the city, people need to drive from commuter towns to get to work. Greenfield sites: need more open spaces like gardens on rooftops or parks such as Hyde Park. Recycling: placed outside shopping centres and bus stops, reduces litter and pollution, non-biodegradable
Include how it can be improved, why it helps, and why it is an issue
Tackling sustainability in London
Hybrid buses, congestion charges, Source London, cheap travel not at rush hour, flexible working hours, work from home, FIRST STEPS programme (helps low income workers buy houses), energy efficient housing, BedZED in Sutton, green spaces
