Q

What differ coal from gas and oil as primary energy resources?

A

Much of the coal is used for electricity generation which results in high energy
losses due to the conversion efficiencies. Low delivered energy

Q

Electricty generation in the UK is dominated by?

A

Coal and gas

Than nuclear and bio mass lastley oil and renewable resources (small small fraction)

A large loss in conversion from the power station input to the electricty generated.

Q

What will happen with the coal plats and what will the consequenses be in the UK?

A

They are closing down due to age and the impact of pollution control making many coal plant uneconomic.

As the coal is a large part of the electricty generation this can lead to shortage in electrical supply during peak times.

Q

What is the situation now and what are happening with renewable energy in the UK?

A

Renewable energy is small now. Wind around 11 GW capacity but due to government policies it is rapidly growing (along with rest of Europe).

Q

What are the main points in the UKs climate change bill?

A
  1. A largely decarbonised electricity generation sector by 2030, primarily using renewable sources for electricity generation with other electricity generation from fossil fuelled plants utilising carbon capture and storage .
  2. A largely de-carbonised heat sector by 2050 with significant progress by 2030 through a combination of reduced demand and energy efficiency, together with a massive increase in the use of renewable or low carbon heating
  3. Almost complete decarbonisation of road transport by 2050 with significant progress by 2030 through wholesale adoption of electric cars and vans and significant decarbonisation of rail by 2050
