UK Civ AIP Flashcards
Rate of climb and descent in CAS
Not > 8000fpm
1,500ft to level reduce to magnitude <1,500fpm
ideally <1000fpm within 1000ft
Magnitude not less than 500fpm unless safety reasons / notify ATC
MTAs
Military Training Areas eg. East Anglia MTA, North Wales MTA
NOTAM’d
usually in Class C airspace
Do not flight plan through it, you will be denied / re-routed unless and emergency
Free Route Airspace
Scottish airspace, Chart available
Plan wherever you like
FL255 - FL660
Established on ILS, VOR, NDB
1/2 FSD ILS or VOR
+/-5 degrees NDB
MAP Climb gradient
assumed 2.5% (1 in 40) unless stated
Minimum obstacle clearance (UK)
VFR flights 500ft clear of ground, water, any persons, vehicles or obstacles
SERA states glide clear safely as a general rule, then:
Except when necessary for take-off or landing, or except by permission from the competent authority, a VFR flight shall not be flown:
(1) over the congested areas of cities, towns or settlements or over an open-air assembly of persons at a height less than 300 m (1 000 ft) above the highest obstacle within a radius of 600 m from the aircraft;
(2) elsewhere than as specified in (1), at a height less than 150 m (500 ft) above the ground or water, or 150 m (500 ft) above the highest obstacle within a radius of 150 m (500 ft) from the aircraft.
Tolerance of ETA at an ATC requested point
+/- 2 mins
outside of this, ATC require an update
Loss of two-way comms. In CAS Out CAS VMC IMC
Flight planned route (ATC know what to expect from you):
In/Cleared CAS already, continue IFR as planned (ATC expect this) or if required maintain VMC and land at nearest suitable.
OUTCAS and not cleared CAS, remain OUTCAS unless safety requires otherwise.
VMC. Remain VMC and land at nearest suitable.
AIP ENR 1.1
3.4.2
Relevance of Class E Airspace
Separation
Clearance
Service
IFR - separation provided vs IFR but not guaranteed vs VFR
VFR - no clearance required to enter, no R/T or XPDR necessary (unless RMZ/TMZ) hence ATC cannot guarantee IFR separation.
Doncaster CTA 13 (small sliver east of Don)
Scottish TCA
Scottish airways (are TMZ)
ATC will notify flights moving from higher CAS class into E as you may have reduced protection from other traffic (“unknown VFR traffic environment”)
Class C Airspace
Separation
Clearance requirements
VMC criteria
All airspace above FL195 to FL660 (includes airways / control areas) and Free Route Airspace
IFR vs all traffic
VFR vs IFR, Traffic info on other VFR
Requires: ATC Clearance, Flight plan, radio
Instructions mandatory
VMC:
Above FL100 8km 1,500m 1,000ft
Below FL100 5km, 1,500m, 1,000ft
Max 250kts or lower
Class D airspace
Clearance
Separation
VMC
Class D created to enable rotary and VFR flights in and out of aerodromes in CAS.
Busier aerodromes and RMZ and TMZ to strengthen SA on traffic situation.
Requires: ATC Clearance, Flight plan, Instructions mandatory
Separation: IFR vs IFR, Traffic info on VFR
VFR traffic info vs VFR and IFR
VMC: Above FL100 8km 1,500m 1000ft Below FL100 5km 1,500m 1000ft DAY ONLY Below 3000 AMSL or 1,000 AGL (higher); 5km 1,500m 1,000ft Below 140kts, 5km COCISS Rotary 1,500m COCISS
Class A
All control areas (airways) below FL195 unless notified otherwise.
Requires: ATC Clearance, Flight plan, Radio, instructions mandatory Separation: All flights separated. VMC minima (not relevant but same as usual)
Scottish, London FIR and UIR
FIR: SFC - FL245
UIR: FL245 - FL660
RVSM airspace
FL290 to FL 410 inclusive
“Unable RVSM due equipment/turbulence”
“Ready to resume RVSM”
“Negative RVSM, State Aircraft” - notify Negative RVSM on initial contact, freq change, and level changes.
When to expect CPDLC
At and above FL285
At and above FL195 (ie. Class C) when possible in LON/SCOT FIR/UIR
DLIC (initiation), ACL (clearances and instructions), ACM (comms management), AMC (microphone check).
aircraft require one of: ATN VDL 2, FANS1/A, FANS1/A+
