UK Afghanistan Flashcards
Has Britain been successful of promoting british values? (soft power)
Britain is particularly strong in terms of ‘soft’ power, i.e. its powers of persuasion, being
considered a country of democracy, tolerance and one which promotes stability and
law abiding. - By getting involved in this conflict as part of the US coalition, it
demonstrated that it is still a key player in the Middle East and in global politics.
Has Britain been successful of promoting british values? (taliban)
They helped removed the Taliban, who openly block access for women to work, be
educated and have equal rights.
What have been the positive aspects? (cultural change)
there is a consistent and much larger scale frustration and protesting going on in Afghanistan now about the removal of women’s rights.
What have been the positive aspects? (Education of recent generations)
has created a much more aware and skilled population. By 2018, girls made up almost 38 percent — 3.8 million — of students in the country; by comparison only 5,000 Afghan girls were enrolled in schools in 2001.
What have been the positive aspects?(Al-Qaeda)
Al-Qaeda was severely weakened
What have been the negative aspects?
(Aid and corruption)
The use of aid by the UK was significant but a large amount of
this was given to the national police. The police were accused of frequent corruption, embezzlement and human rights abuses.
What have been the negative aspects?(Taliban)
Probably the biggest failure was the six days after the withdrawal in August 2021, the Taliban were back in control of the country.
What have been the negative aspects?(Cost)
The overall cost of between £22-32 billion for the UK alone, is a huge sum of money. We currently are seeing the highest rates of poverty and hunger in Afghanistan since before the conflict began.
