UE special tests Flashcards
What is a painful arc sign test?
Patient actively elevates arm in the flexion or abduction plane
What is a + painful arc sign?
pain or deviation from normal movement pattern in the 60-120 degree range of motion
How do you perform a drop arm test?
Arm brought passively to 90 deg; pt tries to lower arm slowly
What structures are assessed with a drop arm (codman) test?
supraspinatus
When do you have a clinical finding with drop arm test?
IF pt is unable to lower arm slowly, arm drops to side
How do you perform an Empty Can Test?
Horizontal adduction to 30 degrees and IR. Resist active abduction
What structures do the Empty Can Test assess?
supraspinatus tendon
How do you perform a dropping sign (infraspinatus muscle test)?
With pt arm at side, elbow flexed to 90 degrees, examiner applies a force towards internal rotation (pt engages ER)
What structures are assessed with the infraspinatus muscle test?
infraspinatus muscle-tendon
What is a + infraspinatus muscle test?
pain or weakness in the infraspinatus muscle-tendon
How do you perform the Hornblower test?
With pt’s shoulder in 90 degreees abduction and elbow flexed so that the hand comes to the mouth
What structures do the horn blower test assess?
Teres minor muscle-tendon
What is a positive Hornblowers test?
reproduction of pain and/or inability to maintain UE in ER
How do you perform a Rent Sign test?
Pt’s UE in full extension, examiner ER/IR UE while palpating anterior GH joint
What structures are assessed with a Rent Sign test?
Rotator cuff tendon
What is a positive Rent Sign?
presence of a palpable defect
What is the loose packed position of GH joint?
55°ABD, 30°horizontal ADD
What is the close packed position of the GH joint?
max ABD and ER
What is the capsular pattern for GH joint?
ER > ABD > IR
What is capsular pattern for GH joint with diabetic patient?
IR > ABD > ER (opposite!)
What is painful arc?
pain through or at end AROM
GH painful arc?
between 60-120* of ABduction
AC painful arc?
end of ROM (felt at the AC)
