NMES, Med freq, Russian, EMS Flashcards
NMES is for what type of muscle (innervated/deinnervated)?
innervated muscle
What type of current does NMES use?
Biphasic PC (pulsed current)
What is the pulse frequency/rate used for NMES muscle strengthening? Muscle reeducation, spasm reduction and edema reduction>
30-85 pps (pulses per second) for strengthening
For everything else, between 35-50 ops
What is the pulse duration for NMES (all types)?
150-200 μs for small muscles, 200-350 for large muscles
For muscle strengthening, what amplitude of NMES stimulation should you use in injured pts? Uninjured?
> 10% MVIC (max voluntary isometric contraction) for injured
>50% MVIC in uninjured
What are the typical on:off time (surge) for NMES?
initially set at 1:5 for injured or weak its but can reduce time with repeated treatments/with stronger pt.
What is the ramp time associated with NMES?
2 seconds
How long should you do muscle strengthening NMES?
10-20 minutes to produce 10-20 reps
How often should you do muscle strengthening NMES?
Every 2-3 hours when awake
For NMES muscle spasm reduction and edema control, what amplitude should you use?
Enough to produce visible contraction
For NMES muscle spasm reduction and edema control, what on:off time (surge) should you use?
1:1 (2-5 seconds on: 2-5 seconds off)
For NMES muscle spasm reduction and edema control, how much ramp should you have?
at least 1 sec
For NMES muscle spasm reduction how long and how many times a day should you treat?
10-30 minutes every 2-3 hours until spasms are reduced
For NMES edema control, how many times a day should you treat?
30 minutes 2 x a day
What is Medium Frequency e-stim used for?
Muscle strengthening
