UE: Shoulder Flashcards
What bones make up the shoulder girdle?
scapula and clavicle make up the shoulder girdle they are both part of the appendicular skeleton
What are the bones of the upper extremity?
Humerus
Radius and Ulna
Carpals and Metacarpals and Phalanges
What part of the arm is the radius and ulna- forearm or arm?
forearm elbow to wrist
What part of the arm is the humerus- forearm or arm?
arm shoulder to elbow
Where is the radius in relation to the rest of the arm/hand?
Radius is on the thumb side of the hand.
Where is the ulna in relation to the rest of the arm/hand?
Ulna is on the pinky side of the hand.
Radius is _____to ulna.
lateral Radius is lateral to ulna.
Thumb side is ______ medial or lateral
The thumb side is lateral.
Pinky side is _______ medial or lateral
The pinky side is medial.
Carpals
bones in wrist
Metacarpals
bones in hand
Phalanges
bones in the fingers- digits
What is the axilla?
armpit
What is the glenoid cavity?
part of scapula where humerus articulates
What kind of joint does the humerus form with the shoulder?
ball and socket
What does the acromion process of the scapula articulate with?
clavicle
What does the corocoid process of the scapula look like?
C-shaped hook
What does the corodoid process of the scapula attach to?
pec minor
What does the suprascpaular ligmaent of the scapula close off?
suprascapular notch of the scapula
Does anything pass through the suprascapular notch of the scapula?
yes, a nerve passes through here
What part of the skeleton do the shoulder girdle and proximal humerus make up?
appendicular skeleton
Name the 3 joints of the shoulder:

Sternoclavicular
Acromioclavicular
Glenohumeral

What is the sternoclavicular joint?
Shoulder joint- between medial part of clavicle and manubrium of sternum, only attachment between UE and axial skeleton
What is the acromioclavicular joint?
Shoulder joint- between acromion of scapula and lateral end of clavicle
What is the glenohumeral joint?
Shoulder joint- ball and socket joint between head of humerus and glenoid cavity
What kind of movements can the glenohumeral joint make?
i. Allow for a lot of movement- produces all the movements at the shoulder joint 1) abDuction and aBduction at the shoulder 2) flexion and extension at the shoulder 3) medial, lateral , external rotation 4) circumduction
What is the glenoid labrum?
It is fibrocartiliage that sits in the glenoid cavity to make it more of a socket. Allows head of humerus to plug into this socket.
What surrounds the glenohumeral joint?
ligaments, rotator cuff muscles and bursae
What are the three joints of the shoulder?
