Scapular AROM: A. Elevation B. Depression C. Protraction D. Retraction E. Superior Rotation F. Inferior Rotation
A. Pt shrug shoulders up to ears. OP: Elbows if not pain.
B. Pt to bring shoulder down away ears. OP: press down shoulders
C. Pt round shoulders while manually guiding OP: Around rib cage
D. Pt bring shoulder blades together in the back. OP: Pull posterior on acromion around rib cage.
E. Bilat shoulder abduction w/ thumbs pointing up towards the ceiling.
Upward and lateral movement of scapula
F. Begin in full abduction and observe movement of scapula during adduction movement.
Observation: quality and symmetry of movement for all motions.
Scapular PROM:
A. Elevation and Depression
B. Protraction and Retraction
Pt in sidelying on opposite side to the shoulder being tested.
A. PT passes caudal arm under pts arm, thumb and index finger cup the inferior angle. Superior thumb over superior edge of scapula w/ fingers.
Elevation: Raise scapula
Depression: Use superior hand to depress the scapula.
B. Caudal arm: index finger on medial border of the scapula. Other arm cup the acromion to control mvmt.
Retraction: Guide w/ caudal and push w/ superior hand.
Protraction: Use both hands to guide shoulder into protraction.
