when do we use the indefinite article?
usually, when it is in singular form. the noun must always have an article when we have an adjective before it
adjective before (example):
jeg ser en gutt. der er en rosa bil!
when do we NOT use it?
with professions, nationalities or other nouns that define a person
when do we NOT use it?
when the verb is: å være, å bli. we also do not use it after phrases with SOM
She wants to be a teacher. She is a doctor. She works as a doctor.
hun vi blir lærer. hun er lege. hun jobber som lege.
article is always before adjectives:
hun er en hyggelig person. hun er en dyktig lege.
she is a nice person. she is a skilled doctor.
hun er en hyggelig person. hu er en dyktig lege.
if we use other verbs than være/bli, we must use the article:
jeg kjenner en lege. han deiter en lærer.
she knows a doctor. he dates a teacher. he asks (dates?) a teacher.
hun kjenner en lage. han deiter en lærer.
non-countable nouns usually have no article:
jeg drikker vin. jeg liker suppe.
i drink wine. i like soup.

we usually omit the article when we express a tool/mean that we will use to perform an action (instumentalis):
jeg skal reise med fly. jeg skriver med penn. vi spiser med kniv og gaffel.
i will travel by plane. i write with pen. i eat with knife or fork.

expressions without an article: many nouns do not have an article when they follow the expressions:
å gå på, å være på
to go to, to be at
å gå på, å være på
