(How does it relate to Global politics)

A

Realism refers to state’s prioritising their specific interest over the interest of the international community.
features of realism
- Realism is state centric
states according to realism pursue their interests, defined as power.

it is the maximasation of power that is in the state’s interest thus everything a state does is it’s desire to maintain or increase it’s power in relation to other states.

how does it relate to global politics

A

cosmopolitism construct and defend moral arguements focusing on the rights of individuals promoting ethical principles. cosmopolitism reflects a desire among global actors to cooperate to reach common goals and outcomes to meet challenges that are presented to the global community.

Refers to the concept of moral rightness based on ethics, law, fairness and equity that, importantly, also seeks punishment and/or compensation when these ethics are breached. Extends to global politics through international systems of justice, such as the International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice, which seek to uphold international law and deter future violations.

define international law

A

Traditionally only relating to states, international law is a body of rules established by custom or written legal agreements that are accepted as binding upon the international community. Customary international law applies to all global actors. Written legal agreements, such as treaties, are only binding to those who consent to it through explicit ratification. Some international laws may apply only to states, such as the UN Convention against Torture, while others may apply directly to citizens, such as war crimes.

define and differentiate

A

refugee has been perscuted from their country of origin and through legal and adminstrative process is a refugee and protected by international law through the 1951 convention and 1967 protocal.
an asylum seeker is someone who left their original country and soemone who is seeking international protection.

Germany is one of the most receptive towards refugees as of 2022 around 2 million refugees has been registered in germany.
cosmopolitan stance
by choosing to take in this many refugees Germany is choosing an cosmopolitan stance as it is choosing to forfeit it’s national interest of economic prosperity and parts of its soveirnigty in the purusit of ethics and morals.

A

iceland takes 50 refugees over 2015 and 2016 despite having the economy and facilities to recieve more refugees the Icelandic government has chosen to tighten asylum laws where asylum seekers lose health and social benefits 30 days after an faield application.
deported 200 failed applicants
the icelandic government is pursuiing its national interest and have a realist stance towards refugees
