U3KA8 Flashcards
What are clinical trials used for?
Vaccines and drugs are subjected to clinical trials to establish their safety and effectiveness before being licensed for use.
How do they not ruin the validity of the study?
By putting several protocols put into place.
What are the protocols used in clinical trials?
Randomised selection of groups, placebo controlled trails and double-blind trials.
How does randomised selection of groups work in clinical trials?
Volunteers are separated into groups, the selection of the groups is randomised to prevent bias based on age or gender.
How does the placebo controlled trails work?
Two group of participants are set up, one group takes the real drug drug and the other takes a placebo. This allows valid comparison of the results.
What is a placebo drug?
A drug that does not effect to the body, they are usually sugar pills, saline injection or something that will medically have no effect.
Why does the group size matter into the clinical trial?
Because if the group size is small, the clinical trial can be declared unreliable.
