What is an autocratic style?
Tells staff what decision have been made and makes decisions without input from subordinates
Features:
- Subordinates expected to comply with decisions
- Manager likes to retain authority and control
- Decision making and communication are top down
- Product and efficiency are high priorities
Benefits:
- Direct communication
- It is clear who is in charge
- Roles & expectations defined
- Focus on productivity & efficiency
- Immediate decision making
- Experienced decision makers
- Useful with inexperienced staff
Limitations:
- Shows lack of trust (no employee input)
- Centralised power
- Teamwork not encouraged
- ‘Us & Them’ mentality may develop
- Low motivation & job satisfaction for employees
- Immediate decision making not always the best
- Does not prepare employees for possible advancement
