U3.1. Oxidation and Reduction Flashcards
Oxidation
Loss of electrons or increasing oxidation state
Reduction
Gain of electrons or decrease in oxidation state
Oxidizing Agent
Accepts electrons and gets reduced in a chemical reaction, causing another substance to be oxidized.
Reducing Agent
Donates/ loses electrons and gets oxidized in a chemical reaction, causing another substance to be reduced.
Redox and the Displacement of Metals
The more reactive metal is oxidized (loses electrons), and the less reactive metal ion is reduced (gains electrons).
Redox and Combustion
Oxidation of fuel (loss of electrons) and the reduction of oxygen (gain of electrons), with energy being released as heat and light.
Redox and Corrosion
The metal undergoes oxidation, losing electrons, and the environment, often oxygen or water, undergoes reduction. Weakens the metal overtime.
Redox and Electrochemical process
Generate or use electrical energy by transferring electrons between substances.
Oxidation State (number)
A number assigned to an atom in a molecule or ion, indicating the number of electrons lost or gained relative to the element’s neutral state
