U3.1 Chemical Equilibrium Flashcards
Open and closed Systems
Open System: energy is transferable between the system and surroundings
Closed System: energy is transferable between the system but not into the surroundings.
Chemical equilibrium
Reaction at equilibrium where there is no net change in the R&P amounts
Dynamic Equilibrium
Rate of forwards and reverse reaction is the same
Chemical Equilibrium
The relative concentrations of the reactants and products when a reversible reaction reaches equilibrium
Reversibility of physical vs chemical changes
Physical is reversible (e.g. ice to water/water to ice)
Chemical is not reversible (e.g. log to fire)
Factors affecting Equilibrium
Increase/ Decrease in concentration, pressure and temperature (catalyst just speeds up process)
Homogenous Equilibrium
all the reactants and products are in the same phase, typically either all gases or all liquids (or solutions). Can interact uniformly
Heterogenous Equilibrium
Reactants and products are in different phases, such as solids, liquids, and gases
Kc and Qc Relation
Both reveal information about the equilibrium of a reaction. Kc is
