U3-1-1 - Metallic Bonding and Reactivity Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the structure of a metal lattice
A
Positive metal ions surrounded by delocalised electrons
2
Q
Metallic bond
A
Electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons
3
Q
Displacement reaction
A
A reaction in which a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from a compound.
E.g. Mg + FeSO4 → MgSO4 + Fe
4
Q
What allows metals to conduct electricity?
A
Delocalised electrons
(charged particles + free to move)
5
Q
Why must a d.c. supply be used during electrolysis?
A
So that the products can be identified.
Otherwise, a mix of products is made at each electrode
