U2 STUDY DECK Flashcards

This deck is available to help review U2 umpire responsibilities in the NCAA Softball 4-Person System.

1
Q

U2:

What are my responsibilities when the plate gives the “I’m home” signal and U3 chases?

A

I need to move immediately to a credible position to cover plays at 3rd base. While it’s good to have a look and an opinion, I do not have tag responsibility at 3B… PU will take that from his position at home.

Q

U2:

Bases loaded, what is my pre pitch for U3 or U1 going out on a trouble ball?

A

In general, I need to be prepared to fill the vacancy left by the umpire who went out, except for the few situations where the Plate Umpire comes up to cover.

Q

Pre-Pitch:

On line drives to the infield, should I take an extra second to make eye contact with my partner(s) in the area to verify before signaling a ruling on the play?

A

YES

In almost all cases, that extra second of visual crew communication will help prevent double/conflicting calls on line drives that border different coverage areas (i.e. a shortstop making a play diving in, but also back toward second base, etc…).

Q

U2:

What do I do if either of my partners on the line hard-commit to bracketing a foul fly ball?

A

Be aware, and be flexible! If either partner commits to bracketing a fly ball, move into a position between 2B and their base, and be prepared to move to a calling position at either base as the play dictates.
