U1 STUDY DECK Flashcards
This deck is available to help review U1 umpire responsibilities in the NCAA Softball 4-Person System.
U1:
- Runner on 1st
- U3 goes out on a trouble ball
What are my responsibilities?
- Move in foul territory to line-up a tag-up by R1 at 1B (less than 2 outs).
- Prepare to run to a primary position at home if R1 advances beyond 2B.
U1:
- Runners on 1st and 2nd
- U3 goes out on a trouble ball
What are my responsibilities?
As soon as U3 goes out, I need to move immediately to a primary calling position at home.
NOTE: If R1 and R2 are clearly not attempting to advance, it is acceptable for U1 to remain at 1B.
U1:
- Runner on 1st with two outs
- U2 goes out on a trouble ball
What are my responsibilities?
I’m responsible for all plays at 1B and 2B.
I need to move quickly to a position between 1st and 2nd upon reading U2’s outfield ball coverage
U1:
- Runners on 1st and 3rd
- U2 goes out on a trouble ball
What are my responsibilities?
- I need to move quickly to a position between 1B and 2B (inside or outside, based on the location of the ball).
- I have all plays at 1B and 2B.
U1:
True or False: I go home anytime the PU moves up to 3rd base.
TRUE
In the 4-Person system, in a situation where U3 leaves the infield for outfield ball coverage and the plate umpire has responsibility at 3B, I will rotate home just like the 3-Person mechanic.
Pre-Pitch:
On line drives to the infield, should I take an extra second to make eye contact with my partner(s) in the area to verify before signaling a ruling on the play?
YES
In almost all cases, that extra second of visual crew communication will help prevent double/conflicting calls on line drives that border different coverage areas (i.e. 2B making a play diving in, but also back toward second base, etc…).
