U2 KA1 - Gamete Production And Fertilisation Flashcards
Define a germline cell
A germline cell is one that eventually leads to the formation of sex cells (gametes).
Where are Male gametes produced?
The male gametes that are formed at the testes of a human male
They are produced from germline cells in the tiny tubes called seminiferous tubules.
Where is semen produced?
Accessory Glands
Role of the Prostate Gland
Secretes a thin lubricating liquid containing enzymes. The enzymes keep the fluid at the optimum viscosity (thickness) for sperm motility
Role of the Seminal Vesicles
Secrete a thick liquid rich in fructose to provide sperm with energy for motility and hormone-like compounds that stimulate contractions of the female reproductive tract.
Where is testosterone produced?
Interstitial cells which are found between the seminiferous tubules
Where does Testosterone pass to from the interstitial cells
Bloodstream
Where does gamete production occur in females?
Ovaries
What is the role of a Follicle?
Each egg (ovum) is surrounded by a follicle which secretes the hormone oestrogen and this protects the developing egg.
After ovulation (release of the egg), the follicle develops into a corpus luteum which secretes the hormone progesterone.
What happens to egg during ovulation?
The ova is released into the oviduct where the egg become may become fertilised to form a zygote
