What does the dove represent?
The Paris Peace Summit that was supposed to discuss issues like Berlin and nuclear weapons.
What does the plane represent?
The U2 spy plane that was shot down by Soviets over the Urals mountain range on 1st May 1960.
What does the collision suggest?
That the spy plane is to blame for the possible failure of the Paris Peace Summit.
Why is it ironic that Khrushchev looks happy?
He was calling for peaceful coexistence yet is happy to gain an upper hand over USA at the detriment of the Summit.
How is the fact that is it created by a British newspaper significant?
Britain and USA were allies. Even Britain is placing blame on America for the threatening of the success of the Summit. Shows the worldwide opinion of blame placed on America.
Why is the fact that it was published in May 1960 significant?
After the spy plane was shot down. Summit was supposed to happen in May 1960 too showing that the spy plane destroyed hopes of a successful Summit.
What is the purpose of the source?
To show that there won’t be any peace or decrease in tension between the USA and SU. Shows blame on America but could also be critical of Khrushchev- does he really want peace or is it all an act to make him look good?
What is the source useful for?
To show international condemnation of America and that the U2 Crisis ended hopes for a successful Paris Peace Summit.
