Tabula Rasa
The theory that individuals are born without built-in mental content, and therefore all knowledge comes from experience or perception.
Empiricism
The view that knowledge originates in experience and that science should, therefore, rely on observation and experimentation.
Structuralism
Early school of thought prompted by Wundt and Titchener; Used introspection to reveal the structure of the human mind.
Introspection
The examination of one’s own conscious thoughts and feelings.
Functionalism
The early school of thought promoted by James and influenced by Darwin; explored how mental and behavioral processes function. How they enable organisms to adapt, survive, and flourish.
Experimental Psychology
The study of behavior and thinking using the experimental method.
Behaviorism
The view is that psychology should be an objective science that studies behaviors without reference to metal processes.
Humanistic Psychology
A historically significant perspective that emphasized the growth potential of healthy people.
Cognitive Neuroscience
The interdisciplinary study of brain activity linked with cognition. (Includes perception, thinking, memory, and language).
