U1: L15: Inheritance Flashcards
What is inheritance?
Process of genetic information is passed down the generations.
What are chromosones?
Thread like structures that are made of DNA that also carry genes
Where is DNA found in?
in the nucleus
What is a gene?
A segment of DNA that also has protein
What are chromosones made of?
DNA
What are alleles?
A different version of a gene.
Give me an example of allele?
Eye Color
The gene for eye color determines the color of someone’s eyes.
The alleles could be:
Blue (allele 1)
Brown (allele 2)
What is the full no. of chromosones?
Diploid cell - 46
What is the half no. of chromosones?
Haploid - 23
What does xx stand for?
female
What does xy stand for?
male
What are the 2 types of alleles?
Dominant alleles
Recessive alleles
What is a dominant alleles?
always expressed
What is a recessive alleles?
expressed when 2 copies
How do you identify the dominant alleles?
The letter is always capital
For e.g; Bb, BB
How do you identify the recessive alleles?
The letter is always lowercase
For e.g; bb, b
What is phenotype?
blood group/ appearance
What is genotype
arrangement of genes
