Substances found in food that are required by the body for growth and for the maintenance of body systems.

Macronutrients
A
Nurtrients that are large molecules our body needs in large amounts to provide us with energy. The groups are fats, protein, carbohydrates and water.

A
Small molecule nutrients that our body needs in small amount. Essential for our body to properly grow and develop and to function properly.

- Involved in the development of all cells in the body
- Concentrated scources of energy
- Monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated, trans

Monounsaturated Fats
A
- Lowers LDL cholesterol
- Sometimes are able to raise to amount of HDL in the body
- Found in avocado, almonds and macadamia nuts

Polyunsaturated Fats
A
- Can reduce the levels of LDL cholesterol in the body
- Sometimes are able to raise the amount of HDL cholesterol
- Found in vegetable oils, sardines and nuts and seeds

Saturated Fats
A
- Eating too much can raise bad LDL cholesterol in your blood
- Too much consumption can leed to weight gain
- Found in milk, cream, butter, eggs, red meat

Trans Fats
A
- Raise bad cholesterol (LDL) and lower good cholesterol (HDL)
- Too much intake can increase the presense of adipose tissue in the body (how excess fat is stored in the body)
- Found in cakes, pastries and some fried foods

Protein
A
- Building block of amino acids
- Increase the number and size of cells
- Helps with tissue repair and regrowth and bone lengthening and hardening
- Assist in the immune system by producing antibodies
- Found in red meat, poultry (chicken, turkey), eggs
- Can get it from some plants but meat scources are better absorbed by the body

- Spilt into simple and complex
- both types provide energy for brain function

- Simple sugars
- Include glucose and fructose and are broken down easily by the body
- Used more quickly as its breakdown process is faster
- Found in fruit, honey, table sugar and milk
