U1 and U2 Main Feedwater Pumps Flashcards
Explain the design, function, flow paths, and system interconnections of the main feed pumps
Flowpath, Condensers, hotwell pumps, SJAE, TACW, Condensate Booster Pumps, Heaters 1-4, Discharge from Heater Drain Pumps, Strainers, Feed Pumps, Heaters 5/6, Steam Generators
Elos Ensure 4000 GPM min flow
East MFP to condenser B
West MFP to condenser A
Main Feed Pumps Condensers go to Condenser B
Modes of Speed Control
Speed Control: Set RPM
DP control: set dp to maintain
Auto DP control: Maintains 165 PSID between Bypass header and Feed Pump Discharge Pressure
DP Tech Data Book: as Total Steam Flow Rises Required DP increases as well
Turning Gear Requirements
Zero Speed

Seal Water Sources of Water
- Condensate Booster Pump Discharge
- Seal Water Pump
- Hotwell Pump Header
- CST
Seal Water Flow Path and function
Receives water and Throttles FRV 259, 260, 261,262 to maintain seal water outlet temperature between 120 and 165. Seal water of higher pressure than feed water is supplied to a tortourous path to prevent feedwater from leaking out and flashing to steam.
Seal Water Pump Auto Start
Seal Water Pressure DP is 15 Psid from Feedwater Pressure
Main Feed Pump Expedited Cooldown
- Fail Seal Water Inlet Valves Open
- Lower Main Feed Pump Oil Temp to 80-90F
- Isolate Suction and Discharge of the Main Feed Pump
- Establish drains from the Main Feed Pump
U1 Lube Oil Pumps
- Shaft Driven Pump
- 138 GPM and 55 PSIG
- Aux Lube Oil Pump
- 170 GPM and 180 PSIG
- Autostart at 43 PSIG
- DC Emergency Oil Pump
- 95 GPM and 55 PSIG
- Supplies oil when turbine on Turning Gear or Loss of AC
- Autostart at 36 PSIG
Vapor Extractors
Maintain a negative pressure to remove moisture and prevent oil leaks form the tank.
Transferring Main Feed Pump lube oil coolers
Valve has 3 Positions secured with locknut
- Counter Clockwise = 1 cooler in Service
- Half way between Clockwise and Counterclockwise= 2 Coolers in Service
- Clockwise = 1 cooler in service. Not the same as in number 1
Fill valve opens to allow flow to both coolers until oil vents through to the tank.
Lube Oil Coolers
NESW cools them
In the summer WMOS open so you can pinch down on the Reg valves for better throttling capability
Switching U1 Main Feed Pump lube oil filters
- Verify Drain Valves Closed
- Verify Vent Valves Closed
- Align Pressure Indicator
- Slowly position the selector valve to start filling new filter
- Throttle open vent valve
- When full close vent valve and fully position selector to new filter
Main Feed Pump Sources Of Steam
- Main Steam: Bypass Header (Highest Energy Steam)
- Reheat Steam: Steam from after the MSR’s (Preferred Source)
- Aux Steam: Supplied from which ever header feeding Aux steam
U2 Lube Oil Pumps
- Shaft Driven Pump
- 227 GPM at 42.5 PSIG
- Aux Lube Oil Pump
- 318 GPM at 35 PSIG
- Autostart on 15 PSIG
- Emergency Lube Oil Pump
- 63 GPM at 10 PSIG
- Autostart on 15 PSIG
U2 Lube Oil Filters
- Disk raises on indication of High DP in filter
- Swap by:
- Verify Filter drains closed
- rotate LO-222 1/4 the way until hard stop
- filter fills with oil, when free from air
- back off a bit and press ball handle on inlet valve
- rotate vale rest of way ensuring flow through sight glass stops
