typical cervicals Flashcards
position of cervical quadrant (vertebral artery) test
patient’s head and neck in extension (off end of table), sidebend and rotate neck to the same side and hold for 30 seconds
symptoms of pos cervical quadrant test
dizziness, nystagmus, abnormal sensations and/or altered mental status = vertebral arteries being compressed
safety rules for HVLA
- do not thrust if setup is uncomfortable
- do not thrust if setup produces neurologic symptoms
- localize barrier and maintain localization throughout the setup
- if it does not feel right or the barrier feels rubbery rather than firm, do not thrust
indications for HVLA
SD with firm, distinct barriers
absolute contraindications for HVLA
- lack of patient consent
- absence of SD
- rheumatoid arthritis
motions of C2-C7
rotation and sidebending to same side, extension or flexion
orientation of the superior facets
BUM: backward, upward, medial
_________ are a unique adaptation of typical cervical vertebrae to allow for more stability during movement
uncinate processes
typical cervical HVLA set up
rotation and sidebending to same side, extension (regardless of whether flexed or extended)
final corrective force of typical cervical HVLA
quick anterior, superior thrust toward the patient’s eye from your 2nd MCP joint
relative contraindications for HVLA
- acute herniated nucleus pulposus
- acute radiculopathy
- acute whiplash/severe muscle spasm/strain/sprain
- osteopenia/osteoporosis/osteoarthritis
- spondylolisthesis
- metabolic bone disease
- hypermobility syndromes
