what is the psychological criteria
broad, multifaceted set of criteria to determine whether an individuals behaviour is typical or atypicalv
purpose of the pyschological criteria
in the context of development - to determine whether a child is developing typically and as exppected for their age group as well and in the context of mental wellbeing
5 categories of the pyschological criteria
cultural perspectives, social norms, statistical rariety, personal distress and maladaptive behaviour
cultural perspectives
consideration of cultural perspectives involves using cultural norms or standards to determine whether behaviours are acceptable or typical for a certain culture, this is because whether a behaviour is typical/atypical is often determined by the culture within which an individual lives
cultural norms
the shared rules or expectations by which a culture guides the behaviour of its memebers
social norms
shared standards or soccial beliefs about what is normal, acceptable or typical behaviour, these norms can be forml or informal, they function to provide order and predictability in society
informal norms
informal understandings, they are unwritten and have less serious consequences
formal norms
formal rules and norms, they are codified and have more serious consequences, sometimes with a legal component
statistical rariety
based of a normal distribution curve, normal or typicaal behaviours are considered to fall in the middle area closest to the average, atypical behaviour deviates signifciantly from the statistical average or meean, falling outside either end of the middle area
personal distress
whether a behaviour causes personal distress to the individual concerned, is it does the behaviour is considered atypical, personal distress often involves unpleasent or upsetting emotions such as sadness or anxiety
