How strong was it?
T’was a category 5 storm with speeds in excess of 195 miles per hour
Primary effects:
6500 people killed
90% of Tacloban was destroyed with 600,00 people displaced and 40,000 homes wrecked
30,000 fishing boats damaged
Power lines and crops destroyed
400mm of rain fell
Secondary effects:
14 million people affected
6 million lost a source of income
Roads were blocked which cut off aid to isolated areas
Some areas had no electricity for over a month
Shortages of fresh water, food and shelter which caused outbreaks of diseases
Schools destroyed which affected children’s education
Looting and violence broke out in Tacloban
Short term responses:
US aircraft carriers conducted search and rescue as well as delivering aid
1200 centres set up for the homeless
Philippines Red Cross handed out food aid
Long term responses:
People were paid to clear up debris
Cyclone shelters were built near the coasts
New homes were built away from areas that can flood
